Scott Galloway · 27:26
Is if we can suppress the vote and swing districts that are leaning towards a Democratic candidate, we can effectively win the election. Because it wasn't it wasn't that so many people voted for Trump that got him elected. It was that so many of the traditional of Hillary got discouraged or confused or quite frankly she just didn't inspire them and didn't turn out. So and you're talking about a dumpster fire of damage versus a mushroom cloud of a nuclear bomb when you're talking about Facebook. And this speaks to my, I don't know what I'll call it, my loss. I don't if we're doing winners and losers yet, but the banality of evil. That is that people have a tendency to look back on really horrible periods in our history and think that the primary force of that period was sheer evil from a small group of people. And that evil can't take purchase unless there's a certain apathy. True. True periods of true evil, there's sort of a banality of it. And that is right now I would argue that the banality of evil that we are experiencing is that we have just said no to the notion that the largest communications platform ever in the history of man has decided that they will let influence go to the highest bidder regardless of the veracity of those statements. That to me is just so unacceptable in the fact that we have decided that we'll accept that because we just kind of shrug our shoulders and we're apathetic and like, Facebook's going to do what it's going to do.
Kara Swisher · 28:53
No. I don't think so. I think people I think the jig is up on a lot of this stuff. I think it does get tiresome.
Scott Galloway · 28:58
But where is it jigging?
Kara Swisher · 28:59
How's it going? Think Bloomberg's being very effective. These ads that he's doing, he did one on gun control last night that was great.
Scott Galloway · 29:05
They It was awful, Kara.
Kara Swisher · 29:06
No. Was my loss.
Scott Galloway · 29:08
You're wrong. It's awful.
Kara Swisher · 29:08
No? Okay. We're gonna talk about it. I think they're I think they're quite good. I think his ads are quite good. Think he's got a very sharp team, and I think he is behind the scenes. He knows from data.
Scott Galloway · 29:17
And so You are officially in the echo chamber.
Kara Swisher · 29:19
I am not in the echo chamber. I know we know some Speaking
Scott Galloway · 29:21
to other wokesters in DC and New York.
Kara Swisher · 29:23
Bloomberg's best friend, aren't you? Like, I don't know. I love
Scott Galloway · 29:25
the guy. And I hope I hope power.
Kara Swisher · 29:27
Got a crack digital team, and I think they are going to
Scott Galloway · 29:29
use it. 100%.
Kara Swisher · 29:30
And let me just say, I'm gonna quote Joan Didion, which is a quote that just popped up on my my, We Croak, which was, this was the year, my 20, when I discovered that not all promises would be kept, that some things are, in fact, irrevocable, and it counted after all every evasion, every procrastination, every mistake, every word of it. Let me just say all of it. I just think that this is... People get tired. I don't... I think they're not gonna be apathetic this election. I do not. I do not
Scott Galloway · 29:58
be apathetic. There are there are two cohorts who need to turn out to beat Trump. The first is the base. Yep. He's turning out our base for us. That is not who we need to turn out. And this goes to that ad. When I first saw that ad you're talking about about gun control, I was very moved by it. It was a well produced ad. But here's the thing, the second base, and that's moderate voters, they don't care about black people or gun control. And when I say they don't care about them, that's not the issue they're worried about. The opportunity at the Super Bowl would have been to talk about income inequality, the fact that the tariffs are hurting the economy, the fact that the guy has absolutely no business being in the business and running the country given he's the worst man on line of Michael good. Bloomberg. Those But ads are that was the opportunity. And that ad, that ad, as much as I loved it and it makes you and me feel good, it only reinforces what we already believe. He already has us. He already I don't agree. Was that was a terrible brand strategy
Kara Swisher · 30:48
We're gonna get... Well, we'll go by the Trump ad. Okay. That's your loss that he missed an opportunity.
Scott Galloway · 30:54
The Trump ad, by the way, was fucking brilliant. Fucking brilliant. Safer, more prosperous, lowest unemployment of Latinos, lowest unemployment of blacks, wages growing faster than they have in the last thirty years. I mean, and then a bunch of f fifteens flying across the sky. I hate the man. I'm gonna do everything I can to get him out of office. He schooled Michael Bloomberg in that one ad. I think the rest of Bloomberg ads are fantastic. I think they're... I agree with it. They're great. Last night was an errand brand streamer.
Kara Swisher · 31:22
So you would like him to do income inequality or something. He used one of the ones he's been doing, which are quite good too, that he
Scott Galloway · 31:27
should Like Carvel said, it's the economy, stupid. Gotta get the swing voters. They're all about the economy.
Kara Swisher · 31:31
Do you like the Mike can do it thing? Do you think that's a good Yeah. Mike's
Scott Galloway · 31:35
I think I I agree with you. I think he's got very talented people. I like his ads. It's I think it's hilarious that a guy showing up with a much bigger stick. I've always I've always... My thesis has always been that Trump is effectively, if you look at his dad, is broke and then saw the presidency as a chance to get out of bankruptcy or an impending bankruptcy. I think he's doing this all for money.
Kara Swisher · 31:55
He's done it. Don't think it's job power. Think he's He's gonna be rich for the rest of his life.
Scott Galloway · 31:58
That's true. Yeah. Think... But I think that's why he's doing it. I think I think the guy's broke.
Kara Swisher · 32:01
That is your fail.
Scott Galloway · 32:02
Well, yeah, just my fail was I thought from an execution standpoint, it was a brilliant ad, but from a brand strategy standpoint, they didn't look at their target market. It was a missed opportunity in terms of we need to turn out.
Kara Swisher · 32:12
Okay. All right. What is your win then?
Scott Galloway · 32:15
My win is that the halftime show was not Maroon five. That's my win.
Kara Swisher · 32:19
Come on.
Scott Galloway · 32:19
That was
Kara Swisher · 32:20
such a good that was
Scott Galloway · 32:21
I thought Shakira and Jayla. That shit was money. The big dog was busting a move. I don't know about you when Yeah. I dance my kids literally act as if they're being tortured. They're like, make it stop. We'll do our thing.
Kara Swisher · 32:33
Tortured. You didn't dance to JLo, did you, when she
Scott Galloway · 32:36
Oh my god. I busted a
Kara Swisher · 32:37
move. No.
Scott Galloway · 32:38
I busted a move. I had a few I had a few White Claws, which I'm really warming up to. Oh, no. And all of a sudden, the White Claw said, daddy, time to bust a move.
Kara Swisher · 32:47
Oh, no. She just let her dance. Let them dance. Take were care
Scott Galloway · 32:50
of Let
Kara Swisher · 32:50
me just say, these are not young women. They're... This was was everything about it. Latina, older women.
Scott Galloway · 32:56
It's all relative. They look pretty young to me.
Kara Swisher · 32:57
Sexy as hell. Just smart. A lot of subtweeting going on in the dance, but the... I was not expecting the feathered boa that was an American flag that became a Puerto Rican flag, which was, like, the most fantastic subtweet of all time, and then the cages with the kids. There was so much going on there, and yet it was also happy and entertaining. I I don't know how they pulled that off. They were totally subtweeting everybody, but then they managed to make it fantastic.
Scott Galloway · 33:22
And Fox clearly, it... It's really... Fox...... Care.
Kara Swisher · 33:26
Fox
Scott Galloway · 33:26
just like... Fox literally has to try and appeal to everyone. It's their one shot. They're pimping all Fox these Nation. Terrible Oh, yeah. They're pimping all these terrible shows on Fox. Then the commentators
Kara Swisher · 33:37
It's Fox Nation.
Scott Galloway · 33:37
Are... Okay. The commentators are Jimmy Johnson, the former coach of the Cowboys who's 77 Mhmm. Terry Bradshaw, legendary Hall of Famer. Hold on. 71. Howie Long, who looks like the kid, is 60. It literally looks like early onset dementia trial group. Yeah. And these guys... And then they're like, okay, somebody, some producer watching it goes, look at all these old white guys. We gotta go for the future. And they put like hottie Latinas during during halftime. So they're trying to appeal. There's something for everybody at the Super Bowl. They're just trying to appeal I think
Kara Swisher · 34:10
J Lo should run for president. That's my feeling. I just think she's fantastic.
Scott Galloway · 34:14
She's incredibly talented. She's Kira. She... Kira's not only like She's Kira's
Kara Swisher · 34:17
so good.
Scott Galloway · 34:17
She's got like crazy talent, super sexy. And she... Doesn't she look nice? She looks Doesn't she look like the kind of person you invited
Kara Swisher · 34:22
over for
Scott Galloway · 34:22
tea?
Kara Swisher · 34:23
I literally was like, it felt good for our country that moment. Like, you know what? I'm...
Scott Galloway · 34:26
Yeah. They did a nice job. This is... And no maroon five. That's the key. No maroon five.
Kara Swisher · 34:30
What happened? Let me ask you. Since Beyonce? Beyonce was also good, a little bit more militant, but this was fun and subtweeting at the same time.
Scott Galloway · 34:36
What ad did you like the most?
Kara Swisher · 34:38
Oh, I haven't seen them all. I like the Groundhog Day one, the Jeep one. I thought that was cute. I haven't seen the woman from Game of Thrones singing yet. I've gotta see that one.
Scott Galloway · 34:48
The Audi one? That was pretty good. There were
Kara Swisher · 34:49
a couple of good ones. There was... I didn't like the weird little peanut thing. That was odd. I found that odd.
Scott Galloway · 34:53
Yeah. That's gotten a lot of criticism.
Kara Swisher · 34:55
I was like, you can't be baby Yoda. Alright. So my win and fail, I'm gonna do one this week, Yeah. Lila Jana, who was an entrepreneur I knew not very well, but pretty well. She had a company called Samasource. She passed away from cancer at 37, and she founded a bunch of organizations, but one of them was was to help employ people in in... Poorer people in Kenya, Uganda, India, other places. Just a really interesting, not just a female entrepreneur, but entrepreneur in general, sort of as... I wouldn't say a social justice warrior, but very focused on social issues and had this... Got this odd and terrible cancer and died. Soft tissue cancer. And she was just terrific. I've I've interviewed her a number of times, and I tweeted about it. I was like, she she had a Harvard education. She had everything. And and and she could have done anything, and she did this. And so I really felt, it was a huge loss. And often, she didn't get it as much attention as she as she deserved, including from me and others. I mean, I've written about her when they got funding and stuff like that, but they... She just was... It was just a really... Just someone who had true impact on the world. And so that to me was... Her life was a win. Her death was a fail. Obviously, we all die, but this was just tragic at this age, of of, of this. Anyway, just a terrific woman, a terrific entrepreneur, and a real loss for our world in terms of of of people that are trying to do creative and interesting things. So that would be my win and fail.
Scott Galloway · 36:27
Yeah. It's very sad.
Kara Swisher · 36:28
Yeah. She was great. Did you ever meet her? She was great. She she was awesome. No. She was... She's been... She... You've been in places she's been at. She's been... Definitely been. But anyway, she was great. She's very funny. And just not... It was sad. It was sad. Anyway, alright, Scott. I think that's it for today. We're not gonna do predictions today.
Scott Galloway · 36:47
Yeah. No. It's a it's
Kara Swisher · 36:48
a I'm sorry. I'm a weird bummer.
Scott Galloway · 36:49
I'm sorry. I know. That's that's very sad. I'm sorry. I'm I'm I'm sorry that you you passed around the article, and I did not know her. And so I appreciate you passing around
Kara Swisher · 36:57
the article. To J Lo then.
Scott Galloway · 36:59
J Lo. Let's talk J Lo. Ilocaucuses.
Kara Swisher · 37:02
Ilocaucuses. We'll talk about that after they're over. We'll talk about it later this week.
— Predictions segment begins —
Scott Galloway · 37:05
We don't wanna make any predictions either.
Kara Swisher · 37:07
Let's make one right now before
Scott Galloway · 37:08
we go. Alright. We're gonna make a quick one. Alright.
Kara Swisher · 37:10
What is yours? What is yours?
Scott Galloway · 37:12
So I think it's gonna play... I think Bloomberg's gonna be the winner in the sense that no dominant victor's gonna come out. The people who are supposed to do well aren't gonna do as well as they'd hoped. And I think all of a sudden everyone's going to start talking about Bloomberg as a viable candidate. And I'm biased, but there's I think Mayor Pete is going to do well. Although what's just so crazy about all of this, I don't know, I don't know if I can't remember if I gave Mayor Pete money or I signed up or something. I get three emails a day from either Mayor Peter, his husband, basically at this point begging for money. I mean, eight hours, like this is it. Send money now. It's so clear that money has just become Yeah,
Kara Swisher · 37:51
He's got it.
Scott Galloway · 37:51
Money. It just... It it is the mother's milk of campaigning. And these guys are just so desperate to stay in the race, you can see why they get to this point. But my prediction is that in a weird way,
Kara Swisher · 38:02
it might more cumbersome. For everybody. Yeah. And then it's gonna go into Super Tuesday. Although, I do think Biden's shown a little bit of spark, a little bit more spark than before.
Scott Galloway · 38:10
Spark? Where's that spark?
Kara Swisher · 38:11
No. You know, her... His wife was great today on MS. I have to say, they they should drag her out a lot more. Like, put her up because she's quite a live good. Live wire and
Scott Galloway · 38:19
She's very good.
Kara Swisher · 38:20
So intelligent and so smart and just really such a contrast to to Melania Trump, obviously.
Scott Galloway · 38:26
Yeah. And she's young and good looking. She makes him look 80. She brings down his age ten or fifteen years.
Kara Swisher · 38:30
The case. I think he's got a tiny bit more spark than you think. I know what you mean. But I think he's got but I agree with you. I think this is going to be like 15% for everybody, and then what? And then what? Although, you never know. Bernie might, you know, surge forward.
Scott Galloway · 38:42
Bernie's got momentum. He does.
Kara Swisher · 38:44
I know. He's he knows he's very Trump like in that regard in terms of his base. They're not like Trump people, but they're he's got a he's a he's got a
Scott Galloway · 38:53
What happened to Andrew Yang? Where's he going?
Kara Swisher · 38:55
Oh, he's doing good. He's still in He's doing well? He's still hanging around the basket. Yeah. I think so. Yeah.
Scott Galloway · 38:59
I'm convinced that's your next cohost of Pivot is Andrew Yang.
— Predictions segment ends —
Kara Swisher · 39:02
Oh, it's true.
Scott Galloway · 39:03
It would be that Lovett guy, but he's got his own rock
Kara Swisher · 39:05
star You what, I've a list. Let's just say it.
Scott Galloway · 39:07
You've list. That's comforting.
Kara Swisher · 39:13
Anyone working with Scott Galloway needs
Scott Galloway · 39:15
to have a That needs to have a backup plan. Oh, god.
Kara Swisher · 39:18
Who knows what's gonna happen with that White Claw and
Scott Galloway · 39:20
I need to stop bearing bones.
Kara Swisher · 39:22
Wait, Scott. Before I go, I cannot resist Jeff Bezos being sued by his Oh
Scott Galloway · 39:27
my god.
Kara Swisher · 39:28
Not really his brother-in-law. Don't... It's just his girlfriend's brother.
Scott Galloway · 39:31
Hold the fuck. Okay. Let me get this. Alright. So granted granted the dog wasn't exactly lighting the single scene on fire when I got divorced, but... Okay. Think about this guy. This guy... So remember that woman who was eaten by a giant python while she was Yeah. Growing pineapples? That immediately, unfortunately, it's tragic, but it immediately outs her as a bad gardener. No. Jeff Bezos is the worst dater in the world. Let me get this. Him of sending his dick pics, which he sent to his girlfriend, which she then forwarded to her brother, which he then forwarded to the National Enquirer. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that mister Bezos is terrible at dating. He needs to roll with the dog. There are just some basics here. No dick pics. Don't piss off the brother. And by the way, don't just jump into a relationship. He should be saying that He should be That's and saying who wants to go to the Academy Awards with the biggest dog, the one day prime dog in the world? This guy is literally... He's the best in the world at a lot of things. He is the worst dater in the world. Alright. Says Scott, the best dater in
Kara Swisher · 40:52
the world. Anyway, bad situation for Jeff Bezos. And, honestly, I feel sorry for him. This brother seems like just such a sketchy character and just awful. And, you know, you... When you go out with someone, you you you do marry their family in a lot of ways, and here you go. And this is what he's got.
Scott Galloway · 41:06
Do you think that's a negative forward looking indicator when the family of your lover is suing you for defamation. Is that a red flag?
Kara Swisher · 41:14
It's not good.
Scott Galloway · 41:15
Is that a red flag?
Kara Swisher · 41:16
It's not good.
Scott Galloway · 41:17
That's like finding out, oh, I have a new boyfriend, and he's a club promoter. Red flag. Red flag.
Kara Swisher · 41:22
Alright, Scott. We're out. And that is Relationship Advice with Scott Galloway. Anyway, Scott, it's a pleasure. We have a lot of things to talk about later this week. There's a lot going on.
