Kara Swisher · 23:02
I don't know. Think the kids are getting everything. That's what I'm guessing.
Scott Galloway · 23:05
Is that right?
Kara Swisher · 23:05
Yes. I don't think there was any acrimony. It doesn't look like there was any acrimony there.
Scott Galloway · 23:08
Not publicly. They're way too smart. If there was, they wouldn't let it spill out.
Kara Swisher · 23:12
Pretty well early in the early days, and they were so core... They were so lovely to each other. I can't believe it would degenerate into something ugly.
Scott Galloway · 23:18
That's nice. I hope not.
Kara Swisher · 23:19
I mean, it would be a surprise. Something big would have to happen. And she's a classic.
Scott Galloway · 23:22
Like you'd have to start sending dick pics Things out to happen.
Kara Swisher · 23:26
Let me...
Scott Galloway · 23:26
I don't... Excuse that.
Kara Swisher · 23:27
I think it was nice.
Scott Galloway · 23:28
Something to come in between their I don't know what great relationship.
Kara Swisher · 23:31
Let me just tell you... What do
Scott Galloway · 23:31
you mean we don't know what happened?
Kara Swisher · 23:33
We have no idea. She's a class act and deserves all the value that I'm thrilled that she's rich. I like it. It's Lorraine jobs. It's her. Yeah. It's the lady from L'Oreal who's, like, fabulously wealthy.
Scott Galloway · 23:44
Ruth Bethany Court. Whatever. Yeah.
Kara Swisher · 23:46
That's I I didn't... I saw that list. I was like, oh.
Scott Galloway · 23:48
So is Mackenzie gonna go start buying every media company in the world? Is she gonna buy?
Kara Swisher · 23:51
No. No. I think that's Lorraine's judge.
Scott Galloway · 23:53
That's Lorraine Lorraine Shops' name?
Kara Swisher · 23:54
Yeah. Yeah. Lorraine's... Anyway, I
Scott Galloway · 23:57
wish wish them the best. Glad she's a billionaires. And now do you realize if you and I make $50,000,000 a year, it would only take us nineteen hundred years to match Bezos wealth.
Kara Swisher · 24:07
Well, okay.
Scott Galloway · 24:08
So he just lost a... He's now only worth what? 110,000,000,000 on one Whatever. 100 and
Kara Swisher · 24:14
After the first billion, who cares?
Scott Galloway · 24:15
Yeah. There you go. But I'm glad it's over. I'm glad
Kara Swisher · 24:17
they have it. Yeah. Think that was I the think they handled it well. It didn't like... These things can degenerate. And I think that, you you see the wins,
Scott Galloway · 24:23
Wait, I'm confused. It's a win she got a bunch of money in a divorce settlement? No.
Kara Swisher · 24:27
Think it just could have been like,
Scott Galloway · 24:29
I just remember
Kara Swisher · 24:30
so many divorces, like so many loans.
Scott Galloway · 24:31
Oh, the way they're handling it.
Kara Swisher · 24:32
Yes. That's what I'm talking about. That's the win. Although I'm glad a woman has now $36,000,000,000 whatever.
Scott Galloway · 24:37
I'm good. Supposedly there's more wealth controlled by women. But anyways, because I live longer. But anyways, my win is Apple. And I'm going to try and go professorial here. So the algorithm for irrational shareholder returns end of World War II, the introduction of Google, was to take an average product and create brand codes and create all these intangible associations around American youthful and print money. And that requires brand management, thoughtful brand management. And then a series of these unbelievable companies that were able to provide 10x better products, cheap capital, created unbelievable brands, Google, Amazon, etcetera. But Apple is still the best brand in the world. And the reason they're the best brand in the world is they make very thoughtful brand management decisions. And what they did recently that I thought was just genius was they did something that we try to introduce in Brand Strategy called Laddering, where they compare them. They not only look for their best feature to talk about, they look for the feature or their attribute that immediately depositions the competition. The thing that they have Depositions. Yeah, makes someone else look bad. Like if you were to say, hi, I'm Kara Swisher and I have great hair, you would be depositioning me. That might not be your best feature Not very hard. But immediately says, okay, we're done. Game Right? We're done. Hi. I'm the half that has great hair.
Kara Swisher · 25:49
Okay.
Scott Galloway · 25:49
So laddering is Right? Pretty they clearly laddered all the other tech companies and they said, what do we have that they can't follow? We pull 70 data points a day from your phone. Android pulls a thousand. We have encryption. We refuse to give the phone of the terrorists to the FBI, which they should have in my view. But anyways, so have you seen their new ads? They're all about privacy.
Kara Swisher · 26:10
Are
Scott Galloway · 26:11
they? It's your phone. It's your life. Mhmm. And it's genius.
Kara Swisher · 26:13
Although I have to say I've heard some pushback on that by lots of tech executives and not just the ones at Facebook and Google in that they're... That they they pull all that money from Google. They get all, like, bills.
Scott Galloway · 26:23
It might be bullshit, but it's great branding.
Kara Swisher · 26:24
Just saying, they're getting pushed back. I would agree, think they're the most... That's why I use them in their most private phone. But that if they double down too much on it, people are going be like, hey, they're taking money here, they're taking money there.
Scott Galloway · 26:35
Oh, they're setting themselves up for but hypocrisy doesn't seem to get in the way of anyone's shareholder value these days.
Kara Swisher · 26:40
No. But I do think it's hard. It does think those things. Just, you know, I interviewed the CTO of Ford Motor Company recently, and he was talking about that. He said the difficulty of dealing with Internet, many Silicon Valley companies, and I think he singled Apple out. Was, like, not that way, was their obsession with taking everyone's information. And they... When they were doing the car stuff, they're like, we think of not using people's information beyond this step. And so it's really... It's... He's... It was a constant struggle between, the Silicon Valley tech companies who wanna use all the information and the car company. He was like, hey. This is trusted information. And so, anyway, it was interesting. It was an interesting
Scott Galloway · 27:15
I think Ford's done a pretty shitty job with their brand the last few years.
Kara Swisher · 27:18
Agree. But I'm just saying this was an interest... I think a lot of companies that are coming against them that have more regard for people's privacy are having some troubles with Silicon Valley.
Scott Galloway · 27:26
But, anyways, my win, Apple, I still think is the best brand in the world. And I think the brand managers there are really, really strong. They, again, laddered the competition and said, this may not even be the best attribute, but it's the attribute that is going
Kara Swisher · 27:37
to Yeah, definitely sets them apart.
Scott Galloway · 27:39
Deposition everybody else Sure. In
Kara Swisher · 27:40
Compared to others. What is your fail?
Scott Galloway · 27:42
So my fail is, it's my fail from last week, but I was too wimpy and too scared to say it. Fail is Nevada lawmaker, Lucy Flores. I think her complaint or accusation around Joseph... Vice president Biden Mhmm. I don't think she's forwarding the dialogue. Everyone says we're having an overdue conversation here, and I don't think that is a conversation. I think it's an attack. Mhmm. Do you remember when Angela Merkel, when George Bush Angela. Angela Merkel, gangster, probably the best leader of the last fifty years. But anyways, do you remember when George Bush came up behind her and started rubbing her shoulders at a meeting and she went, oh my God, and threw up her arms? No. I thought that was an entire... You don't remember that?
Kara Swisher · 28:21
No, I don't.
Scott Galloway · 28:21
That was an entirely, in my opinion, authentic and appropriate reaction. And I think a lot of people, including our president, learned from that, that in that sort of setting...
Kara Swisher · 28:30
This is the other George Bush? Which one?
Scott Galloway · 28:33
The young one? W.
Kara Swisher · 28:34
Okay. It wasn't the dad who had some issues. No.
Scott Galloway · 28:36
No. No. No. It wasn't. Was when he was older. That's the piece of David Coppafeel, whatever. It wasn't that. This was at I think a GA meeting in Cambridge, Rebelscheros. Anyways, I thought that was, I thought that advanced, I thought there was a lot of public discourse and that advanced the day. When Assemblywoman or lawmaker Flores announces that she was upset by this, a few days before the vice president is supposed to announce or not announce, actively endorsing Sanders, her candidate, it doesn't feel like she's advancing the dialogue. It feels like she's using the cloud cover of this dialogue to attack somebody. And I think it's just total bullshit.
Kara Swisher · 29:15
You know, Nancy Pelosi, I think, handled it well. I'm doing a podcast with her this week. Nancy Pelosi. Speaker of the house,
Scott Galloway · 29:20
Nancy Pelosi. I only heard that about seven Okay.
Kara Swisher · 29:23
Here's the deal. Yeah. Not to our listeners. They don't know. You heard it. Yeah. Yeah. But I think what's interesting is that she said, look. Here's the deal. Do it like you have a cold or just do a strong... Like, she just handled it and then moved on. I thought that was... I thought she handled it. There is... There's two parts of it. One is men should hear this because Yeah. I have to tell you that has happened to me dozens of times. And believe me, people shouldn't be touching care of sweatshirt.
Scott Galloway · 29:45
But let me let me just ask you this, though. Okay? Affectionate work. So you've had inappropriate examples of affection at work. I...
Kara Swisher · 29:52
Me... Not inappropriate. Just I didn't want someone rub my shoulders. I just don't.
Scott Galloway · 29:55
Okay. But let me ask you...
Kara Swisher · 29:56
It's not sexual either.
Scott Galloway · 29:57
Don't feel... Have you ever had expressions of affection at work you were Yes. Receptive Okay. So what I would say is help us figure that gray area. And if you turn around and say, you know, dude, I'm not comfortable with my space. I don't like people. Shoulder massage is never good. Well, that's that's kind of a no brainer. That's sort of like the user's manual. That's like common sense one zero one. Yep. But what I think is appropriate is to have a dialogue, and I Yep. I don't think it's appropriate to wait and go after people when they're kind of what I'll call vulnerable.
Kara Swisher · 30:31
She could turn around instead of these things have built up over years with
Scott Galloway · 30:35
women. Agree.
Kara Swisher · 30:36
And it's like Yeah. Bullshit for thousands of years. Yeah. What's interesting is all the polling is showing that Biden is not suffering from it. That that that... You know, there was a fascinating story in the New York Times about how the Twitter Democrats and real Democrats
Scott Galloway · 30:48
Yeah.
Kara Swisher · 30:49
About how they feel, like, they're not bothered by Biden. They're not... They think things are too partisan. They... It was really interesting the differences between
Scott Galloway · 30:56
I disagree, and this goes into our predictions.
— Predictions segment begins —
Kara Swisher · 30:58
Okay. Alright. We're gonna go... Let's go to predictions. Okay. We gotta finish
Scott Galloway · 31:00
up here. So my first prediction is that ageism and sexism is about to take serious hold in the Democratic primary field. Mhmm. We're about to see the poll numbers for Biden and Sanders plummet.
Kara Swisher · 31:12
Oh, alright. That's really off because, oh, that's I
Scott Galloway · 31:14
think the only reason they're up there is for name recognition. It was them and the seven dwarves, and we're getting to know other people and we're finding that, you know what, Mayor Pete, we just like him more than uncle Joe.
Kara Swisher · 31:24
Have you moved on from Beidou yet?
Scott Galloway · 31:26
You know what? I have another lover. I am flirting with another candidate. And I got senator Bennett in the wings who I just think So is so I got three
Kara Swisher · 31:38
I had a lovely meeting
Scott Galloway · 31:39
with But here's the thing. Alright. The old guys were done.
Kara Swisher · 31:42
Do like any of the women candidates of which there are 53?
Scott Galloway · 31:45
Okay. Again, I'm afraid to say this, but I'm gonna say it. If a woman runs and loses Mhmm. You're not gonna have a female president for twenty years.
Kara Swisher · 31:52
And that's the reason why? Come on, Scott.
Scott Galloway · 31:54
Okay. This is what we need. The gangster ticket is Beto or or Mayor Pete and Kamala as VP.
Kara Swisher · 31:59
Why does she have to be VP? Oh.
Scott Galloway · 32:01
I don't think she has
Kara Swisher · 32:02
so much more qualified. Give me a break.
Scott Galloway · 32:04
I think she's fantastic. I don't think she's as good on her feet as Beto or
Kara Swisher · 32:07
As a politician. Yeah. Yeah. And guess what?
Scott Galloway · 32:09
That matters. It's a very political office.
Kara Swisher · 32:11
But guess who could really actually run things better?
Scott Galloway · 32:14
I think she'd be great. She's very she's very strong.
Kara Swisher · 32:17
Prosecutor, attorney general.
Scott Galloway · 32:18
Yeah. She's outstanding. She would be great. I would love to see
Kara Swisher · 32:21
her the guy who speaks 83 languages and, like, is Have you listened to him? I have. My kids love him.
Scott Galloway · 32:26
Oh my gosh.
Kara Swisher · 32:27
I know. See, now you're... Look. You just truly hear on from Beto.
Scott Galloway · 32:30
Hold on.
Kara Swisher · 32:31
Fast. I told you,
Scott Galloway · 32:32
Beto. Hold on. I'm a slut when it comes to politics.
Kara Swisher · 32:35
Beto was Pete like.
Scott Galloway · 32:36
Just bat your eyes at me.
Kara Swisher · 32:37
I'm lost. Who you were looking for. Pete... Beto was Pete like or Pete is Beto heavy. I don't know. Whatever.
Scott Galloway · 32:43
But did you hear him on... Was it on PBS talking about being gay? He said smart.
Kara Swisher · 32:47
I didn't choose to be gay.
Scott Galloway · 32:48
I would have had this cut out of me. This was not my choice. And he was very open and emotional about it. And then he talked about the Pences and he's like, do they really hate me? Do they really want to convert me? Yes. It was very powerful. And the guy is, oh, and by the way, he drove Humvees around in Afghanistan. Fuck. What the fuck did you do?
Kara Swisher · 33:08
Very accessible. And and he's kind of... It's interesting. He's... You know how people like Alan and stuff like that is the same thing. He's very... Like, people hear him in a way that's really... My mother likes Pete.
Scott Galloway · 33:18
Oh, he's fantastic. My mother
Kara Swisher · 33:20
likes Pete.
Scott Galloway · 33:20
Anyways, my prediction... I don't
Kara Swisher · 33:21
know how that happened. Ages. She's like, I like Mayor Pete. I'm like, what? Agism? She likes Biden.
Scott Galloway · 33:25
Ageism and sexism over the next thirty days. The front runners in thirty days are young white males from the Democratic Party.
Kara Swisher · 33:32
Alright. Okay. If you say so.
Scott Galloway · 33:33
I don't know.
Kara Swisher · 33:33
I think Kamala's gonna come on strong.
Scott Galloway · 33:35
You think?
Kara Swisher · 33:36
I don't know.
Scott Galloway · 33:36
I don't know. She needs an
Kara Swisher · 33:37
epipenic Biden, Kamala. That one you can see a little. That's it.
Scott Galloway · 33:41
Well, think Biden's done. Here's the thing. Every time we boot a president out of office after only four years, it's to really pivot much differently. And we're not going to replace one old guy with another old guy. We're just not going
Kara Swisher · 33:54
do I think the way to appeal to people is to say, are you sick of this stuff? Are you tired?
Scott Galloway · 33:58
100%. Yeah. I agree. But I think that's our number one criteria. It's not who's most qualified, it's who has the best chance of beating him. Yeah. And I think you're probably right. Think I think Senator Harris is probably the most qualified candidate.
Kara Swisher · 34:09
Do you know George Washington was stupid not to brand himself at Mount Vernon?
Scott Galloway · 34:13
What are you talking about?
Kara Swisher · 34:13
Trump said that.
Scott Galloway · 34:15
What are we talking about? Just threw me off. I thought it was a cultural reference
Kara Swisher · 34:18
that did He said George Washington was not smart not to brand himself when he was at Mount Vernon. Why didn't he called his... You know, why didn't he put his name on it, like, kind of thing instead of calling it Mount Vernon?
Scott Galloway · 34:28
Yeah. Instead, we have a city named after him.
Kara Swisher · 34:29
It That's the tour guide who was, like, horrified was like, well, he does have a city named after him in the state. And he's like, oh, yeah. That's good.
Scott Galloway · 34:38
Yeah. That too.
Kara Swisher · 34:39
That's cool.
Scott Galloway · 34:40
That He
Kara Swisher · 34:41
he was just like... Because, you know, they were trying to get Trump interested in the tour. And so they said he was a real estate mogul, George Wood. So that got him sort of vaguely interested.
Scott Galloway · 34:47
Conduit interested?
Kara Swisher · 34:48
Vaguely interested.
Scott Galloway · 34:49
Did he have condos? No. No. They have golden sheep wood?
Kara Swisher · 34:52
No. No. Anyway, it was interesting. Anyway, it'll be interesting. That's a good prediction.
Scott Galloway · 34:56
Do have a prediction?
Kara Swisher · 34:57
No, I don't. I never have predictions. You're the prediction, John.
— Predictions segment ends —
Scott Galloway · 34:59
We gotta do... You know what we gotta do that's fun is we gotta time stamp them and then come back. Because sometimes when we're wrong, it's just fun to discuss it.
Kara Swisher · 35:05
Yes.
Scott Galloway · 35:05
And you know what? We're in the same room with that beer system.
Kara Swisher · 35:08
I know we
Scott Galloway · 35:08
are. If they feel a certain simpatico, if they feel a certain like electricity here, it's because we're in the same room.
Kara Swisher · 35:14
Yeah. But I'm leaving now because I gotta do it important.
Scott Galloway · 35:16
Yeah. Know. Right? Yeah. Yeah. You're having what? Dinner with... You're you're you're rubbing La Roche Posay on the small of the back of my boss's boss somewhere?
Kara Swisher · 35:23
No. I'm going to the... Tina Brown's.
Scott Galloway · 35:26
La Roche Posay. Where did I get that?
Kara Swisher · 35:27
I don't even know what that is. Oh, it's
Scott Galloway · 35:29
the best.
Kara Swisher · 35:29
Tina Brown's Women in the World Conference here in New York. Yeah. And I am going to interview two p... Two journalists, Maria Ressa and Carol Caldweller, who did the, the Guardian of the Guardian. Captain Marvel will be there. Brie Larson's on before me.
Scott Galloway · 35:44
I'm so confused. Beauty and superheroes?
Kara Swisher · 35:46
What the fuck is going on here?
Scott Galloway · 35:47
Saying she's
Kara Swisher · 35:47
on before, and then Oprah's on right... I'm between Oprah and Brie Larson. I'm very excited.
Scott Galloway · 35:52
That's... That is pretty cool.
Kara Swisher · 35:54
Yes. They're gonna all be my best friends.
Scott Galloway · 35:55
Alright. Do you get to have dinner with them or drinks with them
Kara Swisher · 35:56
right idea. I'm just gonna stand there and
Scott Galloway · 35:58
just Just gonna hang out?
Kara Swisher · 35:59
Say hope for best friend is of one of them. Doesn't matter. Office. And then tomorrow, I told you. I'm... Besides Pelosi, I'm gonna address the Democratic caucus, about technology. Do you have any tips that I should talk to all the representatives?
Scott Galloway · 36:11
Don't worry about it. It's all awesome.
Kara Swisher · 36:13
No. Did... What's the Democratic Cargo?
Scott Galloway · 36:15
What do
Kara Swisher · 36:15
you mean? Meet in this place and they discuss issues. It's their issues conference. They all have them. Republicans have them. They go away and they, like, plot. I don't know what they do.
Scott Galloway · 36:23
Yeah. It's it's... At some point some point, it's time for you to do your damn job and start proposing Tell me just that.
Kara Swisher · 36:30
Yeah, okay.
Scott Galloway · 36:30
The problem here is not these companies, they're doing their job. Their job is for profit entities. The problem here is not the technologies. The problem here is that you guys
Kara Swisher · 36:38
have failed to do what every other
Scott Galloway · 36:41
lawmaker has done in the past.
Kara Swisher · 36:42
You have a good joke to start. Thought I got to start with a good joke.
Scott Galloway · 36:45
So my go to is a joke my mother told me, what did the strawberry say to the other strawberry?
Kara Swisher · 36:50
Oh my God. I don't wanna know.
Scott Galloway · 36:52
If we weren't caught in the same bed, we wouldn't be in this jam. Come on. Genius. That's right. I'll be here all week. Try the veal.
Kara Swisher · 37:01
Here. Wait. I got one for
Scott Galloway · 37:02
you. Okay.
Kara Swisher · 37:04
Why did the chicken cross the road?
Scott Galloway · 37:06
Why?
Kara Swisher · 37:06
To get to your house. Knock knock.
Scott Galloway · 37:08
Who's there?
Kara Swisher · 37:09
The chicken.
Scott Galloway · 37:11
That's a joke?
Kara Swisher · 37:12
That's brilliant. That's a brain teaser. I couldn't even follow that. Get it? To get to your house. Knock knock. It takes two classic jokes, brings it together.
Scott Galloway · 37:20
Sure you don't do drugs?
Kara Swisher · 37:21
My young son came up with that one.
Scott Galloway · 37:23
Okay. Good.
Kara Swisher · 37:24
Anyway, I will I will I will give that message. Scott, thank you so much. It's time to go. Rebecca Sinanis produces this show. Nishat Curwa is executive producer. Thanks also to Eric Johnson. Thanks again for listening to Pivot from Fox Media. We'll be back next week for more of a breakdown. Was that a sigh? You just sighed at me.
Scott Galloway · 37:39
No. Was stretching.
Kara Swisher · 37:40
Breaking down. I'm my mind. Things tech and business. If you like what you heard, please
