Scott Galloway · 46:55
Terrible that sounds. But in a small company, you can't have people who aren't working out. And I've always thought the quicker you can fire them, the more generous you can be in terms of severance payments. And then finally, the team with the best players wins. And I think empathy is a form of compensation, and that is I'm gonna get to know you and what you really value. And people value different things. Some people just want... They wanna have their name in media. So if you get an inquiry from the New York Times, say this is the person you should speak to, and that's hugely valuable. Some people wanna manage other people. Whatever it might be, try and figure out their unique wants and needs and show that you will you will... You know, you... You're on their side. You're trying to
Kara Swisher · 47:33
Right.
Scott Galloway · 47:34
You're trying to really figure out what's right for them. And people follow excellence. If they think you're gonna make a lot of money and generate a lot of money, they'll follow you because they'll get to draft off of your success. What I do think you can do, and that I didn't do, was I I thought that I was raised in an era of Steve Jobs, where occasionally in a meeting calling out people or saying provocative, rude, or aggressive things, demonstrated leadership, that if I was talented and a bit of an asshole, it meant I was a genius. Mhmm. Whereas if I'd been talented and just a little kinder on occasion
Kara Swisher · 48:05
Mhmm.
Scott Galloway · 48:06
You know, in my era, that was considered you were sort of just talented. And I I really do regret. There are just some situations, especially with young people. They needed more watering. I... There's a few people I've I've fired, and I regret it. I thought, you know what? I should have worked harder to figure it out, especially a young person.
Kara Swisher · 48:26
I don't know. I don't think you're as much an asshole as as you think you were. And I don't
Scott Galloway · 48:31
You didn't work
Kara Swisher · 48:31
with me, wasn't either. What? Well, you might
Scott Galloway · 48:34
You didn't work with me.
Kara Swisher · 48:34
You also were kind of, like, just more strange than anything else as I recall. Let me read. Let me do a dramatic reading from my book, Burn Book, in the section about Scott. In 2017, I attended a tech event in Germany called DLD, digital life design, and I watched as Scott Galloway, an NYU Stern business professor of brand strategy and digital marketing delivered what was a wacko presentation that included him donning a wig and lip syncing to George Michael's freedom 90 for way too long. While Scott's casual arrogance was familiar to me, his insights were fresh and new. I invited him to join me on Rico Decode, and he said yes. Just saying.
Scott Galloway · 49:11
Oh my god. My nipples are hard.
Kara Swisher · 49:13
I know. I'm just saying.
Scott Galloway · 49:13
When does this book come out?
Kara Swisher · 49:14
There's more. There's a
Speaker · 49:15
lot more.
Kara Swisher · 49:15
I have a lot more about you in there.
Scott Galloway · 49:17
Thank you.
Kara Swisher · 49:17
Yeah. I know. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. It's... I think there's more to you than that.
Scott Galloway · 49:24
Yeah. But, Kara, don't... I mean, I don't I don't know if you feel this way. I feel as if I had... What you realize is if you attain any level power and influence, a tiny bit of kindness, a tiny bit of generosity
Kara Swisher · 49:38
I agree.
Scott Galloway · 49:38
Goes so far. The most wasted resource in the world is good intentions.
Kara Swisher · 49:42
I would agree.
Scott Galloway · 49:43
When someone's doing a good job I agree. When you admire somebody, especially when they're younger than you and you're in charge of the company, to bring them... Pull them into a conference room ago, this was outstanding. Or you are such an impressive person.
Kara Swisher · 49:55
Yeah. More praises, definitely. As someone who has been in both sides, it does.
Scott Galloway · 49:59
It goes so far.
Kara Swisher · 50:01
Yeah. Although it... Well, I'll tell you it works the other way too. I... A lot of tough people are really tough on me also I learned from. So it just depends.
Scott Galloway · 50:07
Be honest. Be straight.
Kara Swisher · 50:07
Yeah. Yeah. I I don't know. I'm not... Wasn't much of a screamer as a boss. I don't like being a boss. I don't think I was necessarily... I would... People would imagine that I was like that, but I wasn't actually. It's not... I don't really like managing. I know. I don't like managing actually is what it was. It's like teaching. I don't really don't like it. Like, it's not... There's nothing wrong with it. But anyway, good question from Brazil. Marcus, thank you so much. Scott remains an asshole. Trust me.
Speaker · 50:33
He has some asshole.
Scott Galloway · 50:34
And strange. But strange.
Kara Swisher · 50:36
You're you're still strange, and you would put on a wig if you could much more than you would. Anyway Hello.
Speaker · 50:42
What are you going for this weekend? What
Scott Galloway · 50:44
Oh my god. I told you. I'm going as Deadpool after the fire. People think I look like Ryan Reynolds after he's mutilated in that fire.
Kara Swisher · 50:50
Oh, yeah.
Scott Galloway · 50:51
I love Halloween. Anyways, Deadpool. Daddy's going as Deadpool.
Kara Swisher · 50:54
I hate it. I hate costumes. I'm going as Kara Swisher. That's who I'm going as.
Speaker · 50:58
I'm going
Kara Swisher · 50:59
as Kara Swisher. I'm wearing soft pants and, you know, a general, I can't stand this attitude. Although, I have to say I do enjoy taking the kids trick or treating because... Now Clara is all into it now, and she's has 17 costume changes, etcetera. But this is the year Saul gets it. He got sort of got it last year, but he's two now, two, close to being two. And what happens in that year when they become two and they do trick or treating, all of a sudden, they... The the penny drops, and they're like, this is fantastic fucking racket. Free candy. I dress
Scott Galloway · 51:31
up. It's amazing.
Kara Swisher · 51:32
You know, I remember Claire, you could see her go, wait a second here. This is fantastic.
Scott Galloway · 51:37
This is good.
Kara Swisher · 51:38
I'm I'm super excited for that moment of her soul. Anyway, I forget what he's going at. He's a giraffe or something like that.
Scott Galloway · 51:44
I I absolutely loved Halloween. I had little kids. That's one of the... My my favorite outfit was my youngest one is Einstein. My oldest one is an artist once. I have a good friend of mine, his daughter this year, they're, you know, they're Jews, but it's hilarious. The daughter's going as Santa Claus. That's what she used to go ask, which I thought was hilarious. But the power move as a parent, as a dad Yeah. Is I not only... I used to, like, sneak their candy, like, when they were asleep, I'd eat
Kara Swisher · 52:07
it. Yeah.
Scott Galloway · 52:07
Now I eat it in front of them. That's the power the
Kara Swisher · 52:11
power do trick or treating? They're a little too old. Right?
Scott Galloway · 52:13
No. They're they're too old. Their father their their father still does it.
Kara Swisher · 52:17
Yeah. Well, they they show up... They... Like, teenagers like that show up with, like, no costumes and a bag.
Scott Galloway · 52:21
Yeah. They just want...
Kara Swisher · 52:22
Yeah. Just yeah. I'm like, no. You must perform for Carousel Trigger. I do not go trick or treating. Amanda takes... Likes to dress up. She goes... And I sit in front of the house with a candy, and I'm like So much fun. No. Yes.
Scott Galloway · 52:33
I absolutely love it.
Kara Swisher · 52:35
Anyway Yeah. If you've got a question of your own you'd like answered, send it our way. Go to nymag.com/pivot to submit a question for the show or call 85551 Alright, Scott. One more quick break. We'll be back for your weekly prediction.

— Predictions segment begins —
Kara Swisher · 53:47
Okay, Scott. Let's hear a prediction.
Scott Galloway · 53:50
Okay. So I just wanna acknowledge this sounds tinfoil hat and a bit paranoid, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. I think at some point in the future, we're gonna find out that the CCP was using TikTok to manipulate and divide America with a disproportionate amount of anti Israel content that they're elevating. I think they see this as an issue that is dividing America and as a means view.
Kara Swisher · 54:13
Manipulating. It isn't just people.
Scott Galloway · 54:16
All I can tell you is if I worked for the NSA and the CIA and I had a neural plant into every Chinese youth into their brains, I would be putting my thumb on the scale of content that diminished their view of their leadership and their society. They'd be... Kara, they would be stupid not to be doing this.
Kara Swisher · 54:36
Well, I know, but you know they do deny this rather vehemently, the the The US people running the company. And I'm I'm just saying. Just like
Scott Galloway · 54:44
I I doubt The US people have anything to do with it. I think this would be so easy and elegant and insidious.
Kara Swisher · 54:49
Well, maybe.
Scott Galloway · 54:50
And I think there's data coming out, and I was... I got some interesting data from a guy who's been tracking this pretty closely. And
Kara Swisher · 55:00
It certainly looks like it. It doesn't mean there's proof. That's my... You know, I've been the one that's been sounding the alarm for years. Yeah. Yes. Okay. Alright. Go ahead.
Scott Galloway · 55:09
But Go ahead. Yeah. I think you're gonna find out. I don't know when. It might be a year. It might be ten years. I think you're gonna find out that when the CCP saw an opportunity to create more... I mean, here's the thing. The biggest threat globally isn't Hamas. I think that's a huge threat. It isn't Putin, although I think it's a huge threat. The biggest threat in America is that we are dividing internally, and technology and gerrymandering and minority rule is ripping this nation apart. And the greatest geopolitical weapon against us isn't tanks. It isn't kinetic power. We spend more than anybody else. We have the finest fighting force in the world. It isn't economic. We continue to attract the most seminal breakthrough technology in history. What do you know? It's all within a bike ride of SFO called AI. The only way to come after us, the only way to reduce our power and what is the greatest experiment in history called US democracy is to get us to continue to hate each other. And the cheapest, most elegant, most insidious way to do this when you, again, have control over America's youth is to start raising topics and... That divide us. I think I think they would be stupid not to be doing this. And some preliminary research on anti Israel content, and I realize this sounds paranoid. And as a as a as a Jew, I realize there's some bias here, but I have been shocked at the amount of pro Palestinian and anti Israel content coming out of high schools and colleges. And then when I think, where do they get their information? Where are they getting this information? And all roads lead to the same place. It's TikTok. So we'll see, but I think in I think in several years, we're all gonna say, oh, that was obvious they were doing it and find out they were. Mhmm. I think it's hap... I think it's happening right now.
— Predictions segment ends —
Kara Swisher · 57:02
Interesting prediction. I... I'm gonna make a short prediction. Yep. There's something off about this speaker. There's something creepy, off, weird.
Scott Galloway · 57:09
You think?
Kara Swisher · 57:10
No. But I think he's gonna... He's in for a world of hurt. Think not just this crazy shit. This... But just that one podcasting we ran was, like, already problematic. But there's something wrong with him, and I don't know what it is. This is just me as Carys Fisher, Spidey sense reporter.
Speaker · 57:27
Mhmm.
Kara Swisher · 57:28
I think he's in for a world of hurt for for... Not because people are trying to get him. It's that... I don't know. There's something off there's something off about him. Well, don't say this about Jim Jordan. I think Jim Jordan's a terrible person, and I think he looked the other way.
Scott Galloway · 57:43
Knew him. He was the devil we knew. What you're saying is he hasn't been vetted. Yes. We don't There's The deep corners of this guy's life have not been... There's not been no flashlight on him. I mean, the thing about Jim Jordan is pretty much everything had been aired.
Kara Swisher · 57:55
He's so performative, this guy. You know, I have a lot of relatives who are religious in his... The way he is, and I find them genuine. I don't like a lot of what they say, but there's something off about this guy. That's just Cara saying something.
Scott Galloway · 58:10
Will he be at this White House thing?
Kara Swisher · 58:12
I don't know. Let's see.
Speaker · 58:13
We'll go to side left
Scott Galloway · 58:14
too. Speaker. Right?
Kara Swisher · 58:15
Yeah. Make a pass at him. Would you do that? Yeah. I don't know.
Scott Galloway · 58:19
It's a sign. Alright.
Kara Swisher · 58:20
So I'll make a pass at him. We'll see. Anyway, we'll both make a pass at him. That'll be
Scott Galloway · 58:24
think what is more disturbing.
Kara Swisher · 58:25
No. We're gonna pass at him. Anyway, we are gonna have a good time at the White House. We still won't be there. And when we tape next, it'll be before we go. So not until Thursday, we'll have a report, which you may read of in news accounts. But we will we will be... We'll be here in Washington together on on Monday.
Scott Galloway · 58:41
Yeah. I felt bad now that I was being cynical. I feel really honored to be invited, and I'm looking forward to
Kara Swisher · 58:46
I know. You were. You were super excited. White House people. Scott Galloway is super excited. He's never been there. We'd like to put the dog on, as they say, for Scott Galloway. And there... There's a ton of fans in the White House, just so you know, and it should be good. It'll be fun. There you go. Alright, Scott. We're almost done, but I hear you're gonna be on Bill Mard.
Scott Galloway · 59:04
Fourth time tomorrow.
Kara Swisher · 59:06
Wow. I never get invited back to
Scott Galloway · 59:08
total gangster, the woman from Fox. He's, like, insanely reasonable.
Kara Swisher · 59:12
She's my friend. Say hi, Jessica Jess Jess Tarlo.
Scott Galloway · 59:15
You're friends with her?
Kara Swisher · 59:16
Yes. Course. She
Scott Galloway · 59:17
seems like an impressive person.
Speaker · 59:18
And you
Scott Galloway · 59:19
know and you know who they're interviewing at the beginning of the show. Who? Andrew Cuomo. Oh. Wow. So that should be interesting.
Kara Swisher · 59:26
Wow. You got a good one. Jesse is great. Jess is great. Say hi to her. She's amazing. I will. I'm excited about that. Smart. She just basically, you know, bitch slaps judge whatever the whatever her name is. Judge judge
Scott Galloway · 59:38
No. I turned on. I remember I turned on the TV a few weeks ago, and I saw this woman making all sorts of sense. And then I looked down, and it was a Fox logo, and my mind literally slipped and broke a hip.
Kara Swisher · 59:47
I'm like,
Scott Galloway · 59:48
what show is this?
Kara Swisher · 59:49
She's great. I'm excited you're going there. Say hi to Bill. Say hi. He's probably mad at me because I... I'm not very interested.
Scott Galloway · 59:54
He likes you. They all like you.
Kara Swisher · 59:55
I doubt it. Anyways, Scott, that's the show. We'll be back on Tuesday with more pivot. Please read us out.
